HYPHEN INTERNSHIPS
Fall, Winter, and Summer Advertising & Community Outreach Internships
Hyphen is looking for smart, overachieving, creative, articulate, innovative, detailed-oriented and above all, dedicated volunteers to join its Business Team, working specifically on advertising. We are interested in social justice issues, politics and pop culture. There is no money involved (maybe commission for the advertising intern), just the experience of working alongside the greatest bunch of people you'll ever meet. There, we said it.
Advertising Internship
We are looking for a minimum commitment of 15 - 20 hours per week for however long your semester/quarter is. We will work with you to get you college credit and you will have the opportunity to earn commission! Students only please.
Responsibilities:
* Work with advertising agencies, nonprofits, and local businesses
* Learn about media buying/selling process
* Develop sales leads
* Design sales materials

Outreach Internship

EDITORIAL TEAM
Hyphen is looking for credible, smart, bookish, overachieving, dusty-fingered, detailed-oriented and opinionated editors. Our editors are news junkies who are interested in social justice issues, politics and pop culture. There is no money involved, just the experience of working alongside the finest Asian American minds that community college ever produced.
We're especially looking for editors in the following areas:
Arts and Entertainment Editor
Hyphen needs an editor who can take charge of our books, movies, music and literature sections and lead our coverage of up-and-coming writers, filmmakers and musicians.
Copy editors
Wordsmiths with a sense of style and substance are what we're looking for in a Hyphen copy editor. If you can shine copy like car wax and make headlines sing, we're looking for you. Previous copy editing experience and knowledge of AP style desired.
Front of the Book
FOB editors coordinate the fun, quirky features that open the magazine. We need editors who can use style and humor to create a section that draws in readers. Here's a few areas in particular where we are looking for editors:
* Lazy Susan: This section is a package of 3 tightly written, intelligent and thought provoking stories in the style of The New Yorker's Talk of the Town. Pieces are short (500-600 words) and tend to err on the quirkier side of Asian American life.
* Redux: Media representation of Asian Americans is the focus of this section. From movies, TV and other traditional media to the Internet and beyond, we want an editor who can examine, analyze and make sense of what's happening in the media.
Web Editor
Help enhance Hyphen's Internet presence. If you can tweet, Facebook, edit, write and know what HTML stands for, we're looking for you. The web editor works with editorial, blog and tech team members to keep Hyphen's web site fresh and current.
General Duties & Responsibilities:
* Attend editorial meetings (at least every two weeks)
* Help determine overall editorial direction of the magazine, and themes for each issue
* Brainstorm story ideas that fit within those themes
* Recruit freelance writers and work closely with them to meet deadlines
* Edit stories from 300 to 3,000 words
* Fact-check copy
* Work with art department to request or suggest art for stories you are editing
* Proofread
Knowledge and Skills:
* Proven editing and professional journalism experience
* Able to snarl at bad copy and rewrite the lead five times — each one better than the last
* Basic copy editing skills (Knowledge of AP Style a plus)
* Loves to spell check
* Plans life around deadlines
* Can wear multiple hats and pick up the slack
* Post-identity politicked
* Down for the cause but not obsessed by it
* Not easily offended or dissuaded by hard-asses
* Loves culture, your momma and self (not in that order)

* Lend your hand to existing projects, such as advertising and sponsorship efforts, and event planning
* Brainstorm for the good of the magazine
* Lead new initiatives from start to finish (and take over others should you wish)
* Table at Hyphen sponsored events (and get in for free)
* Sport our merchandise because it's in fashion every season

BLOGGERS
Hyphen is looking for writers with style and sass to blog for us. Hyphen bloggers need to have an engaging, conversational style consistent with the Hyphen voice, and be highly informed about Asian American culture and politics. Bloggers must commit to posting no less than four times per month on topics of interest to Asian America. Bloggers should have basic HTML editing skills and be familiar with AP style. Hyphen is also on the lookout for a top-notch staff to run the technical aspects of our website. Specifically we need:
Web Programmer
Experience working with content management systems like Joomla or Drupal and integrating third-party features. Also, programming experience with PHP or Perl and intermediate proficiency with databases, XHTML, CSS, Javascript.
Web Designer
* Experience with front-end template design for content management systems like Joomla.
* Coding front-end to work on 4 major browsers (Firefox Windows, Firefox Mac, Safari, IE).
* Proficient with Photoshop or other Graphic applications.
