Fortunately, or unfortunately is more like it, because there was a spate of incidents across LA over the space of a few days, this got a lot of coverage in the local media. UCLA is promising a "full, independent" look at the officer's actions. One local media outlet got hold of the officer's record and found out he has a long history of complaints filed against him for unnecessary or excessive force. He's been suspended pending the University's investigation. It's still frightening, especially when one considers that this is one of the largest and most popular libraries for students from all over Southern California.

I don't see why he couldn't have just gotten up and leave, if he showed force then i guess he had it coming

@ Joe: There were about 2-3 cops at the time when the incident began initially, or so according to the video, and the number'd grown later on. They could've easily detained him without the use of a taser. Just put the cuffs on him, how hard could it be? The use of the torture device (Which tasers are primarily used for, to more easily detain a culprit), was completely unnecessary. And the police officers, who're support to ensure the 'safety' of all students, even went as far as telling them they'd tase anyone who came too close, if all they wanted was their name and badge numbers. You tell me how this works, and how he had it 'coming'.

As a former UCLA student, and an active proponent of APA rights and related issues, I'd just like to put in my two cents and point out that everyone in Powell Library was asked for their ID, not just Mr. Tabatabainejad. Also, as the video shows, Mr. Tabatabainejad put up resistance before finally agreeing to leave (though notably he still yelled obsecenities at the UCPD even after being escorted out). As for the person of color issue, well, a third of the student body here is APA, and many UCPD officers are people of color themselves, so I think it's highly unlikely that racism would be the motivating factor behind this incident.

-He was passively resisting
-He was leaving the library when the cops accosted him
-Yes, he was using obscenities
-None of the above warrant tasering a handcuffed, non-violent human being 5 times.

The campus police was wrong but they were lured into this by a very carefully planned conspiracy. Watch the details get investigated over the next few weeks. How come there was only one student recording? How come the recording did not start from the begining of the incident? Did you hear the student swear at the police? tell them fuck your patriot act? How come his attorney is a 2 time disbarred attorney who was the only attorney trown out of the Federal Court?
Things are never what they seem.

I agree that no matter what the resistance was, the extreme use of the taser seems totally uncalled for. These circulating rumors that this was some kind of set-up are incredibly disturbing to me. How could this case be a set-up? How could the student know that they were going to use such extreme force? Anonymous says "things are never what they seem" but what exactly are we to understand from this?

For starters if you had researched correctly, you would have noticed that Mr TABATABAINEJAD, is Bahai by religion. So I don t know where you get the whole CIA, FBI, KGB, NIAC Mulluh payroll organizations facts. If you search youtube you will hear the swearing and a lot of other things. GET your head of the sand, as I think your a bit paranoid.

This was just simple student vs. police and vice versa. As a student he brings up legitamate issues that could be solved with simple i.d.card readers for active students and he wouldn't have had to deal with police i.d. ing him in his own library. Its bad policy and dangerous to repeatedly tase anyone and pointless if they are lying down and to sadistic to threaten to tase other students so there are legitamate questions to be asked. Admittedly the student was being highly provokative and you have to wonder why so over the top. But I really think its a mistake to claim its all a race issue as one cannot really tell the race or country of so many people in a place like Los Angeles anyways. If you do that then no-one will even consider the question of just who owns the library, the students or the police. That is a great question and obviously UCLA ignorantly put the two in each others way rather than utilize available technology. If we keep blaming all this stuff on race we will one day wake up in a faceless, raceless, police state that rules our every waking moment. Sticking with race arguments puts off even further the day that we start reviewing where we are really going. I think this plays right into the hands of those that dominate our society, which as we all know has become more and more an issue of money and position. I don't want to wake up one day in a "raceless" total police state any more than one based on race.
